FEVER GRIPS THE DINALEDI STAGE AT THE JOY OF JAZZ

The atmosphere was near fever pitch at the Dinaledi Arena on day three of The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz as people braced themselves to be entertained by Vusi Mahlasela, Jonas Gwangwa, The Main Ingredient, and Norman Brown.

Vusi Mahlasela treated us to his authentic style of African jazz. If his performance could be described in a line it would be: he rocked until he dropped. This after he had a minor accident on stage but, as all true legends do, he picked himself up and continued doing what he does best. The audience could not help but sing along and applaud.

If anyone can make playing the trombone look effortless and fun, it is the legendary Jonas Gwangwa. He gave a sensational performance to a capacity crowd which even occupied the floor because there weren’t enough seats. He performed hits from his new album which were: Foreign Natives, Hurry Up and Wait, Kukude la Esivela Khona, and Kuru. One could feel the arena literally tremble from the applause which after each mesmerizing melody.

Any recipe can never be complete if it does not contain The Main Ingredient. These men were in South Africa for the first time in 32 years and were just as energetic. The audience sang along to classics that were reminiscent of the ‘good old days’. Charismatic guitarist, Norman Brown, maintained the energetic pace. He played, he dazzled, he entertained and enchanted the sold-out crowd with his guitar magic.

The renditions of songs from The Isley Brothers and Janet Jackson had people jumping off their seats and singing jubilantly. It was a performance that left the audience chanting, jumping, and dancing. All in all, the atmosphere was electric; the performances were captivating; this was the The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz.
