STELLAR PERFORMANCE BY STERLING ELECTRIC QUARTET
The theatre broke out into male chants and whistles as the four ladies that make up Sterling “EQ” made their way onto stage dressed in striking black ensembles that marked their stage presence.
Their eye-catching appearance was coupled with a vibrant performance, which comprised of their own urban renditions of classical songs by the likes of Beethoven and Vivaldi. Their music brings a high tech approach to classical music, as though their aim is to capture the youth’s interest and convince them to cross over to this music genre while maintaining its status amongst the more experienced listeners of classical music. It comes as no surprise that their music caused even the old at heart in the theater to dance and clap their hands; as they are managed by one of South Africa’s most prominent producers, Gabi Lerroux, famous for producing the hit song Nkalakata for Mandoza. Their overall performance was met by rapturous applause, even though the males seemed more in awe of the riveting beauty of the band.
During the intermission one member of the audience commented that although Sterling EQ had a good stage presence he was disappointed from what he thought was not a ‘raw’ production from the band - he felt he did not get his money’s worth, as the session sounded
pre-recorded.
Their overall set was well put together and coordinated. The coldness of the night seemed to disappear as people were fired up when US entertainer Phil Perry took to the stage.
The man who was voted male vocalists of the year, in the third annual readers choice Internet vote, did well to showcase why he was bestowed with the award.
The audience appeared to be eager and anxiously waiting to be serenaded by this mans powerful voice and messages of love that he expresses through his songs.
His music ignited passion amongst the audience as couples seemed to cuddle and hold each other during the performance.
Although many ardent critics have defined his music as R&B, the man sure does bring a different and dynamic approach to the genre of jazz, hence the title he has been given “The Pavaroti of Jazz”.
He had a lovely performance and shared a lot of life experiences through his lyrics that seemed to touch most people, this was evident when the audience demanded and encore which he reciprocated to wrap up the evenings proceedings.
