OUR SOULS AND JAZZ MEET AT SOPHIATOWN
At a perfect time and place, wonderful people and the beautiful art of jazz came together to crate a remarkable experience. People came from all walks of life to enjoy the smooth and soothing sounds of jazz at Sophiatown, Newtown.
The acts started at 19:00 with Live Rhythms blessing the stage, followed by the CJC band with their soul soothing melodies, then came J4DOT who zoned the audience into the height of the night to conclude the show.
Although jazz is known to appeal to a matured audience things where different at Sophiatown. The setting was very vibey and the place was filled with young people.
As solemn as jazz music can get at times, one interesting thing was that everyone seemed to be having a great time.
It was also very busy all around.
We were delighted to have been given the chance to talk to Papi Koloyi, who plays lead saxophone in the Live Rhythms band. He feels the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz is one of the most astounding experiences he has ever come across.
He feels however the audience should have been more responsive to the act.
The audiences on the other hand, feel they had a very good time; they enjoyed the acts and say they enjoyed the atmosphere the most. “The Joy of Jazz itself is like a theme, it has so many interesting aspects that unfold”, said 20-something year old Reabetswe.
Another important factor picked up from the audience was that the area chosen for the event is perfect - Newtown is the hub of art.
The Standard Bank joy of Jazz brings in new vibes every year.
The artists feel that the event is artistically solid - the acts are very luminous and the selection of artists is very good.
Standard Bank Joy of Jazz fans look forward to seeing many more other experiences such as this one and they want more.
“Sophiatown was turned into a heaven of music and I wish it could go on and on,” pleaded Reabetswe.
Well she’ll have to return next year.
