DRAMA ENGROSSES STUDENTS AT SUMMRA WORKSHOP AT TSHWANE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

“Are you guys on medical aid?,” was a question 26- year old Sidney Stofile directed at the Spanish Jazz Trio, Sumrra.

“…cos you guys are sick!”

Stofile, a third year guitar student at TUT, was not the only one who could not contain himself during a workshop presented by Sumrra at the Tshwane University of Technology.

Excited pupils from the Cultura High School in Bronkhorstpruit made the 40km journey to test the waters as prospective jazz students.

Dimpo Mashilo (15), was very curious about a career in music and said that she is seriously considering making TUT her next move. Mashilo consulted Fransu De Klerk (21), a third year guitar student who smiled and said: “It's a lot of hard work. But if you love it, it’s not like work to you.”

Xacobe Martinez Antelo, bassist for Sumrra started the workshop off by apologising for being 40 minutes late and adding: “I can assure you my music is better than my English.”

The trio kept the audience at the edge of their seats with their vibrant tunes and creative improvisation, especially L A R Legido , Sumrra's drummer's. His unique freeform style includes throwing drumsticks around and climbing onto the drumkit with both feet - drama!

The band’s workshop objective was to demonstrate how important inter-musician communication within a band is. Advice such as; “don't think too much,” and “there are no errors - turn your mistakes into something positive and create rhythm in the chaos,” - entertained and educated attendants.

It’s a pity that many TUT music students themselves were not informed about the workshop in advance. Most students were only present because they happened to have lectures around the workshop venue at the time. Nevertheless, despite the lack of advertising, demand almost overwhelmed the occasion.
