MUSIC WORKSHOP AND THEORY: SOWETO

One of the 10th Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival music and theory workshops was held at the South West Gauteng Collage (SWGC) (Soweto). The workshop showcased a live performance by award-winning jazz artist, Andreas Vollenweider.

Andreas (56) is from Sweden, he loved music from an early age. He points out that South African music is a little different from the music played in Switzerland, however, it’s all the music.

The SWGC Music band opened the stage with a very interesting mainstream jazz piece. Young and talented members of the band performed their two songs written in Zulu with tons of passion.

The workshop started with Andreas playing the instrument he is best known for, the harp.

He told the students and learners that the harp was discovered in Africa more that 6000 years ago.

He further advised students to have their own instrument so that they may be able to play whenever emotions allow them. “Instruments are like parts of my body, they are parts of my soul”, he emphasised.

During the workshop, Andreas explained that music stems from emotions - it is made out of the experiences that a person goes through.

Andreas was engaging and asked students why they like to write and record music.

The responses showed different ideas, as different as the people they came from. It turns out the most important student motives for doing music corroborated Andreas’ lesson; to inspire, express emotions and feelings and to provide food for the soul.

Andreas emphasised that in order to become a great jazz artist, you need not to start by writing a song down. “You can just start playing your instrument and then write the song and lyrics later”.

The Soweto music workshop was attended by music students at SWGC (Dobsonville Campus) and learners from different high schools that teach music as a subject. Their response towards the workshop showed that the workshop was beneficial.
