Their name Minor Band comes from the musical reference to the term minor which is explained by the band as a single stroke, which echoes melody succulent to the ear. These are the standards to which the band measures itself up against.
The band describes their music as being Afro Jazz with influences and elements from swing and bee-bob, Cuban blended with raw traditional African sounds, funk and soul.
Minor is a group of young, versatile and experienced musicians, who have been working over the years with South Africa’s top musicians in different genres from Jazz and Gospel, to Afro Pop. These young musicians have earned individual recognition touring with the likes of Selaolo Selota, Sipho Makhabane, Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Sello Galane and others.
Playing mostly on corporate functions they’ve also featured on a public performance with SABC 2 at the Zoo Lake (2005) and Mogale Jazz Foundation in Kagiso (2006)
The band has also recently backed Womack and Womack on their recent tour to SA.
The members of the band have studied jazz and popular music in different institutions like FUBA, UCT and other national institutions.
Contrary to their name, Minor jazz band is quickly earning a reputation a major player in the jazz scene.
