LEVEL 99

Level 99 is an all male 5 piece Jazz band established in 2008. The band members are all multi-talented multi-instrumentalists with Mangaliso ‘Mangayi’ Mngomezulu as the band leader on 1st bass, drums and keyboard. Alongside Papie ‘Ngamula’ Ketsekile on 2nd keyboards, piano and drums. There is also Teboho ‘Tsunami’ Saohatsi on 2nd bass and drums as well as Dumisani “Freeze” Mkhize on piano, drums and bass and lastly, Siphiwe ‘Spetla’ Mngomezulu on drums.

Level 99 is a reference to the highest level at which they play at. The band does not like to define their music into any one specific genre, but they do have a distinct Afro-Jazz flavour. Their biggest influences are 4play, Bob James and Michael Franks… but this is one band that has created it’s own sound with their own elements to it. Level 99 is a new band which brings a rawness and a fresh twist to the music and Jazz industry.

Their individual experience encompasses major gigs such as the annual Macufe music festival and the Cape Town Meninburg. They have also worked with the likes of Joe Nina, Steve Kekana, Nana Coyote and Babsy Mlangeni, who understood and took notice of their special talent and understanding of Jazz. Level 99 is a band that is ripe and ready for the picking.
